Audiovisual Services has videos on cassette tape, laser disc, and Digital Video Disc covering a huge range of subjects including:

Movies: feature films, silent films, and short films, from China, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Britain, America, Spain, India, Sweden, Japan, including animation, art house, film noir, science fiction, queer cinema, westerns, romance, comedy, melodrama, historical, and movies about movies…

Other formats: along with a collection of recorded music there is also information available on audiocassettes, interactive compact discs and slides.

Facilities

Forty four individual viewing and listening booths, five small group viewing rooms, and one large screening room able to seat thirty people, are available for groups of University of Otago students and staff to consult AV material that is held by the Library.

Bookings for the use of these rooms can be made from the catalogue. AV material can be booked by library staff at any of the Lending or Reserve desks. Bookings can also be made via 'phone or email.

Screening room

Room 201 is available for University academic staff to use in the course of their teaching. It houses a video projector and a two metre screen. There is playback equipment for video cassette tapes, digital video discs, laser discs, compact discs and audio cassette tapes. The equipment can accommodate VHS formats PAL and NTSC as well as standard and long play. Overhead and slide projectors are also available. The video projector also serves as a data show for Powerpoint presentations. There is a network connection in this room.

Using AV Equipment

Equipment is provided for the consultation of Library held AV materials. However, upon approval students may consult material not held by the Library when it is related to a University course. AV equipment is not available for hire. This is available through either Teaching Facilities Administration, ITS, IS Building on Albany Street, or University of Otago College of Education AV Unit, Owheo Building, Union Street.

Terrestrial and satellite television broadcasts

Available in the group viewing rooms. Copyright limits viewing access to students and staff of the University. Programming details for all free to air terrestrial channels, selected SKYTV, and free to air channels from the satellite Optus B1 are available from the broadcasters web sites.
