Description of the Medical & Dental Libraries Collections

The Medical Library houses resources in the broad area of Health Sciences. The Dental Library has dental resources.

The catalogue lists all material available in all University Library branches including the Medical & Dental Libraries.

Books

are arranged according to the the National Library of Medicine (NLM) letter and number classification system. The Library of Congress classification scheme is used for non medical subjects.   New books are displayed for two weeks. The book display is changed on Fridays.

Databases

Health Sciences Databasesare available via DoDI (Database of Database Information), search by title or subject.

Journals

Journals are arranged alphabetically by title. In the Medical Library titles A - Lan are located on the 2nd floor, Lar- Z on the 3rd floor. The Library also provides access to a number of electronic journals held in print form. Please visit this list of electronic journals regularly as we continue to add new titles.

Theses

Masters and PhD theses are located in the Historical Room. Ask at the Lending Services Desk. Theses may not be removed from the library, but may be consulted within the library on presentation of a staff or student identification or library card.

General reference sources

The Reference collections include bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, directories, drug manuals and indexes to the periodical literature in the health sciences. There is also a Government Publications Collection containing statistical publications for New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

If you require assistance in using the libraries please ask at the Information desk. Permanent staff members are normally available to help with enquiries from 9 am to 9 pm weekdays and 9 am to noon on Saturdays during the semester. In addition the library offers an email service to answer reference questions
