Welcome to the Hocken Collections

The Hocken is part of the University of Otago Library system and available to all staff and students of the University. However there are some important differences to note. As a research collection material is “closed access” and reference only. It is not possible to browse the shelves or to take material out. Instead you are asked to request material to be retrieved by staff, and then required to use it in the reading rooms within the Library. Staff at the Reference Desks are happy to show readers how to locate and order material through the catalogues and to advise on resources.

Readers are asked to follow some general guidelines when using the Hocken Collections. They are requested to put bags in the lockers provided before coming into the Reference areas, and to sign the Readers Register at the Reference Desks each day. No food or drink is permitted in the reference areas, but there is a lunchroom available off the foyer where filtered water and hot drinks are available. A small donation is requested for the latter.

Reference

The General Reference area is on the Ground Floor. Here readers can request materials from the publications, maps, music, and archives and manuscripts collections.
Access to the Pictorial collections is from the First Floor where there is an enquiry desk.

How do I find material?

Books, journals, maps, & music: access the publications catalogue. Use your university user name and password to place a callslip request. Use Callslip request to request publications.

Archives & manuscripts (including University archives): access the Archives and Manuscripts catalogue, Hakena. Order Archives using your Hakena Patron No. on your Hocken Collections card. Please note that this command may only be used from within the Hocken Collections.

Pictures & Photos Ask at the Pictorial Collections enquiry desk, first floor.

Tours and classes

General tours of the Hocken are held every Wednesday at 11am and 2pm during the year. There is no need to book.

Subject classes are also available and are designed to support teaching requirements. Staff requiring a subject class are asked to contact one of the following:
