Photographs Collection
The Photographs Collection is a national collection with a particular responsibility for collecting and preserving the photographic heritage of Otago. The scope of the collection is wide, focusing specifically on New Zealand and Pacific material, including a number of studio collections by Otago and Dunedin photographers. The range of material collected includes: prints, negatives (both glass and film), slides, lantern slides, albums, postcards and panoramas. It features many historically significant individual photographers' collections including Rev. John Kinder, Herbert Deveril, J.W. Allen, Joseph Perry, the Burton Brothers, Muir and Moodie, De Maus, and Alex Bathgate. In addition, work by the following contemporary photographers is held: Adrienne Martyn, Paula Brand, Nigel Yates, Lloyd Godman, Di Ffrench and Christine Webster. Staff are on hand to offer advice on sources and give assistance with using the collection and its finding aids. Approximately 9,000 images are available to the public through a reader access file of photographic prints, which allows searching for photographs by geographical location and subject heading. Staff are always willing to assist with specific searches, and (by appointment) are happy to search for material stored in the closed stacks. Reproductions can be ordered in most cases. These are subject to conditions of copyright and preservation requirements. Search the photographs database ContactPhotographs, Hocken Collections, University Of Otago, P.O.
