Music Collection
The Music Collection at the Hocken Collections features sound recordings in a variety of formats (tape, vinyl, compact disc and dvd), printed sheet music and ephemeral material on individual artists and groups. The collection comprises some 16 000 items with comprehensive coverage of the sounds of New Zealand, music from the Pacific regions and some Australian material. Each year, a concerted effort is made to acquire new material across a variety of musical genres. Particular emphasis falls on New Zealand, and especially Dunedin, independent label productions. Many historically significant items are held in both the sound recording and printed music collections. Among these is the first record wholly recorded and processed in New Zealand, a substantial number of APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) silver scroll entries, the sound archives of Dunedin independent label Xpressway and many rare privately produced and donated items. The printed music collection includes scores published as early as the 1850s, the first edition of God Defend New Zealand, through to the modern flourish of major New Zealand composers. These are accessible through the Library's catalogue. In addition to catalogued material, files including promotional flyers, newspaper reviews and articles are available on many New Zealand musicians and groups. This ephemeral material may be usefully consulted with the poster collection housed in the Pictorial Collections of the Hocken Collections. Reference staff, including the Music Assistant, are willing and able to assist with tailoring specific searches of the Music Collection – sound recordings may be listened to in the Library’s audio visual area on the Ground Floor.
